“Virat has hinted that he might want me to come over” : AB de Villiers on becoming coach of RCB in IPL

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has hinted at the possibility of coaching Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the upcoming edition of the IPL 2024. The 40-year-old revealed that although Virat Kohli expressed interest in bringing him back to the team, there hasn’t been any official communication from the franchise’s side

Ab de Villers said โ€œNothing confirmed yet, Virat has hinted that he might want me to come over and spend a bit of time with him and some of the batters. That call will come from Andy Flower, Faf and the team. For now, I’m just going to be in Mumbai for the first few weeks of the IPL. I’m doing a bit of commentating.โ€

In 2023, RCB inducted AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle into their Hall of Fame, following which, the retired cricketer joined the broadcast team. De Villiers disclosed that he plans to continue working with the broadcast team and will soon travel to Mumbai for that purpose. However, he also expressed openness to a coaching role if head coach Andy Flower or skipper Faf du Plessis sees fit.

De Villiers retired from international cricket in November 2022, surprising the cricketing world despite his remarkable fitness and form in the preceding season. He boasts an impressive IPL record, having played 184 matches and amassed 5162 runs at a strike rate of 151.69. Following retirement, he has mainly focused on broadcasting and managing his YouTube channel.
