Tim Southee and Kane Williamson were celebrated in their 100th Test matches for New Zealand, leading their teams onto the field alongside their children amidst the cheers of a packed crowd at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. In the match itself, Josh Hazlewood spearheaded a formidable Australian pace attack, which restricted New Zealand to 162 all out by tea on the first day of the second Test in Christchurch. Hazlewood claimed impressive figures of 5-31, supported by Mitchell Starc with 3-59.

Despite a resilient 55-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Matt Henry (29) and Tim Southee (26), New Zealand struggled against Australia’s relentless bowling. Initially, New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Will Young displayed resistance, reaching 47 in the first 90 minutes of play before losing momentum. However, a collapse ensued, with Young falling for 14 and the innings unraveling rapidly.

Despite a milestone 100th Test appearance, Kane Williamson could only manage 17 runs before being dismissed by Hazlewood. Despite seeking a review, Williamson’s departure was inevitable.

Hazlewood further made significant breakthroughs by dismissing Latham and Daryl Mitchell, while Starc contributed with crucial wickets as well. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey impressed with five catches, aiding Australia’s dominant performance in the field.
