In a historic moment during the 2023 World Cup semifinal between India and New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on November 15, Virat Kohli completed his 50th ODI century.

This achievement not only marked a personal milestone but also saw Kohli surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record for the most tons, bringing his international centuries to an impressive 80. Departing at 117 runs off 113 balls, Kohli’s record-breaking century occurred in the 42nd over of Indiaโ€™s innings. Displaying his prowess, he whipped a 135.1 kmph delivery to deep backward square leg, securing a couple of runs off Lockie Ferguson to reach the century.

The 35-year-old’s jubilation was evident as he jumped and punched the air in celebration after completing his century. Notably, Kohli faced physical challenges, being on his knees due to cramps, before removing his helmet and raising his hands. In a poignant moment of respect, he bowed down to Tendulkar, who was present in the stands alongside legendary footballer David Beckham. Beyond the personal milestone, Kohli’s innings also broke Tendulkarโ€™s record for the most runs in a single edition of the World Cup. Tendulkar had set the previous record with 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup. Currently, the Delhi-born cricketer leads as the highest run-getter in the ICC tournament, amassing 711 runs in 10 matches, showcasing his exceptional form with three centuries and four half-centuries. This performance further cements Kohli’s legacy as a cricketing icon.
