“We’ll see those names again” – AB de Villiers thinks Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are rested from T20Is not dropped.
According to AB de Villiers, the former captain of South Africa, the decision to rest Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the five-match T20I series is in preparation for the 2023 ODI World Cup scheduled later this year.
De Villiers believes that both Kohli and Sharma will return to the T20I format after the conclusion of the ICC’s 50-over tournament. It is worth noting that the two senior batsmen have not participated in T20Is since the 2022 T20 World Cup. They were previously omitted from the home T20I series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand earlier this year.
The decision to rest Kohli and Sharma has sparked curiosity and discussion among cricket fans. As the 2023 ODI World Cup approaches, teams are strategizing and managing their players’ workload to ensure they are in the best shape for the tournament. De Villiers’ insights shed light on the possible plans for Kohli and Sharma in the T20I format moving forward.
AB de Villiers said “No Virat Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. I think this is the new look Indian T20 squad maybe for the really big series against who knows who? Or World Cup? We’ll see those names again, but I do like the Indian squad being a bit proactive and giving these youngsters a turn to show what their mettle is all about. Ultimately, Virat [Kohli] and Rohit [Sharma] also get some rest for that [ODI] World Cup coming up.”
