“When Rahane can come back and become vice-captain, why not Kohli?” Msk Prasad over Indian Cricket Captaincy dilemma.
Former BCCI chief selector, MSK Prasad, has Prasad his opinion on the potential return of Virat Kohli as the captain of the Indian cricket team, replacing Rohit Sharma. Prasad drew attention to Ajinkya Rahane’s reinstatement as the Test vice-captain after a commendable performance in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
He suggested that if the selectors are considering options beyond Rohit, Kohli should be considered for leadership once again.Kohli’s previous captaincy tenure with the Indian team came to an end in a turbulent manner. He stepped down as the T20I captain after the 2021 World Cup and was subsequently removed from the position of ODI captain. Following India’s series loss in South Africa early last year, Kohli resigned as the Test captain, leading to Rohit being appointed as the full-time captain.
During Rohit’s captaincy, India suffered a defeat to England by 10 wickets in the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Consequently, neither Rohit nor Kohli have been involved in the T20 setup. Hardik Pandya has been leading the team in the T20Is, including the upcoming matches in West Indies.
In an interaction with Khel Now, Prasad expressed his thoughts on the captaincy puzzle facing the Indian cricket team.
Prasad said “I don’t know if I can answer this question. I don’t know the mindset of the selectors. Usually the mindset of the selectors should be now with the WTC cycle it should be a clear cycle, that’s how the mindset should be”.
Then the he remarked “Why not Virat Kohli? When Ajinkya Rahane can come back and become the vice-captain, then why not Virat Kohli? I don’t know what the mindset of Virat is on captaincy. In case selectors are thinking beyond Rohit, I don’t know whether they are thinking but if they are thinking beyond Rohit, then I think Virat can also be an option.”
