“Why not throw in a Tilak Varma?” Wasim Jaffer wants youngster in the ODI setup for World Cup.

Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has advocated for the inclusion of young talent Tilak Varma in the ODI squad. Jaffer believes that considering the uncertainty surrounding KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s availability, it would be prudent to provide Varma with an opportunity in the 50-over format, especially in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Tilak Varma, aged 20, has exhibited a commendable performance at the onset of his T20I career. Throughout the ongoing series in the West Indies, he has showcased scores of 39, 51, and an unbeaten 49 in three matches. Notably, he has become only the second Indian batsman to achieve scores of 30-plus in his initial three T20I innings.

Jaffer said “If at all India need a batter to look at in 50 overs, I won’t be surprised if it’s Tilak Varma. The kind of maturity that he has shown, I’ll be happy to see him coming into the ODI mix also.”

Despite his limited international exposure, Varma has left a strong impression on both fans and critics alike by delivering noteworthy performances even under pressure. Jaffer appeals to the selectors to seriously consider Varma for the one-day cricket format.

Adding he said “There are talks that Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are not ready yet. Why not throw in a youngster like Tilak Varma? He’s shown a lot of maturity and (gives) that left-hander option. We’ve been looking for a top-order left-hander. Why not Tilak Varma?
